Corey Scott

“Education is life changing!”

In the mid-1990s, Corey Scott’s teachers at Glen Oaks Community College poured into his life and helped give it direction. Now, as a teacher for more than two decades, Scott himself pours into young lives, helping them become healthy and active through physical education.

Originally from Daleville, Ind., Scott learned of Glen Oaks due to his family having a vacation home on the St. Joseph River. His mother and her family visited the county often as children; Corey’s generation came a few times, enjoying such activities as camping at Sand Lake Park in Nottawa.

Scott credits Glen Oaks with jump-starting his postsecondary education.

“The school was very welcoming and just gave me a comfortable feel,” he said.

He especially appreciated the small class sizes and the one-on-one relationships he had with professors and students.

“It prepared me to finish my bachelor’s degree,” he said of his time on the Centreville campus. “I was an average high school student – I needed to learn how to be a college student.”

His Foundations of Physical Education class laid the foundation for his career: observing an elementary PE class at Centreville “pulled me into becoming a PE teacher.”

He also spent two years on the court as part of the Viking men’s basketball team coached by Chuck Frisbie.

After earning his associate of arts in general studies at Glen Oaks in 1997, he graduated from Anderson University with a bachelor of applied science in health and physical education.

Returning to his alma mater, Daleville High School, he taught 11 years there before taking a middle school PE/Health position at Anderson [Indiana] Preparatory Academy nine years ago. Most recently he became the Academy’s elementary PE teacher.

“I enjoy being around the kids and seeing their successes and improvements,” he said. He loves it when the light bulb goes on for them and they see the benefit of what they are learning.

He also coaches varsity boys’ basketball and serves as assistant varsity baseball coach.

“I enjoy all sports both as a participant, coach and fan,” he said.

Corey and his wife Erin, a dental hygienist and travel agent, share 21 years of marriage. The couple has two sons: Jack, a rising sophomore at Ball State University who is finishing basic training for the Indiana National Guard, and Ben, an incoming senior at Anderson Preparatory Academy.

Scott stays up to date on Glen Oaks news by following its social media, and has taken his family by the school a couple of times.

And each year it warms his heart to see one or two students from his area pursue education and athletics at Glen Oaks.

“It makes me proud,” he said.
