Corrections officers needing college credits can now receive free tuition at Glen Oaks Community College as part of a state grant.
State law requires corrections officers to complete 15 college credits for employment.
The Michigan Corrections Officer Grant Program supports tuition and fees at community colleges statewide that are part of the program as long as participants meet the following criteria. They must:
• Be employed by the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC).
• Have not earned 15 college credits and are eligible for the grant program with the approval of the MDOC.
• Receive approval from MDOC for the program.
• Enroll at a community college in Michigan.
“Corrections officers provide a critical component in the safety of our communities,” said Dr. Adam Cloutier, VP of academics. “We welcome this opportunity for them to receive the credits they need at Glen Oaks and we offer both face-to-face and online class formats to allow flexibility for students who are working and taking classes at the same time.”
